Sunflower veggie garden delight

Lemon cucumbers and mammoth sunflowers growing together. The local Titmice are just so happy with my selection! I see them out there picking at the seeds now that the flowers are bearing good seeds. Better get out there and save some for next year, before they are all gone!

  1. Lemon cucumbers and Mammoth sunflowers are both new to me, but both are so pleasing to the eye, and surely the palate .. even if you are a bird! Do they actually taste “lemony”? And they look so healthy with all the foliage and yellow flowers! The closest I can come is Curcubita foetidissima (Buffalo gourd / Stinking gourd). There is something I admire about those ground-hugging, huge grey-green, heart-shaped leaves. And I don’t think they “stink” at all … well …unless you tear a leaf. At that point a moldy sweaty gym sock jumps out!!!!!

    • Lemon cucumbers taste like regular cucumbers but the seeds are smaller and the skin is very thin and the whole thing is delicious! Excellent in salads.
The bees are enjoying the sunflower blooms and I have seen Chickadees and Titmice flitting in and out of the garden. Never experienced a Buffalo gourd. Probably and very good thing. 🙂
